Some of the best bi-ways for touring in a vintage MG are in and around Placerville, CA. Also of interest in the area are the historic mining sites and excellent wineries within an easy afternoon’s drive. In May of “ought eleven,” we joined Bay Area TC owners for a weekend of dining, drinking, and driving (not necessarily in that order) in Northern California’s golden back country.

Built in 1847 by William Cary, the hotel, located at 300 Main St., served not only those passing through Placerville but miners as well. In 1856, the hotel burned down and was replaced by a three-story brick building. In the 1900s a fourth floor was added. And a rarity for Gold Rush era hotel has an elevator that was added in 1926.
On January 24, 1848, Marshall found several flakes of gold at Sutter's Mill that began the transformation of California from a sleepy outpost to a bustling center of activity. Sutter and Marshall tried to keep the discovery secret, but eventually the word got out. After this discovery at the mill, the "gold rush" era began and many people came from the east to find fortune.
Greg and Sue Boeger purchased the ranch in 1972 and started planting vineyards and built a new state-of-the-art-winery the following year. The old Fossati-Lombardo house was converted into a tasting room and was opened to the public in 1974.
The Jones family specifically selected this location for its prime volcanic soil that is particularly well suited to growing fine wine grapes. They named their new business after this unique "lava cap," where their grapes flourish in the volcanic soil.
